Serge Petroff is the firm’s founding member and a managing partner. Mr. Petroff focuses his practice on civil litigation. His unique experience litigating complex legal matters on behalf of commercial clients, as well as defending homeowners against banks, equips the firm with the necessary ammunition to achieve the most beneficial outcomes for clients. Mr. Petroff is a tenacious advocate who emanates honesty and dedication, and is committed to providing zealous representation and cost effective legal services.
Mr. Petroff is a founding member and Executive Vice President of the New York State Foreclosure Defense Bar. NYSFDB is a non-for-profit bar association of foreclosure defense attorneys who focus their practice on representing homeowners in saving their homes.
Mr. Petroff is also active in foreclosure prevention through the Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) of the Brooklyn Bar Association, helping those who as a result of poverty or special needs may not otherwise have access to the quality legal services that every family deserves. In addition, Mr. Petroff is a current member of the Director's Circle of the VLP Foreclosure Panel.
Steven Amshen is one of the founding members and a partner of the firm. He oversees all litigation and is committed to the dogged pursuit of the firm’s client’s interests and well-being. He focuses his practice mainly to foreclosure defense and has achieved countless successful outcomes, including outright dismissal of numerous foreclosure actions. Mr. Amshen is admitted to practice in New York and New Jersey.

Mr. Tierney has comprehensive experience handling civil litigation matters, from the initial filing of a summons and complaint through the appellate process. Mr. Tierney previously worked for one of New York’s largest firms before dedicating himself to representing helping homeowners facing foreclosure of their homes. Mr. Tierney is also a past volunteer with the Suffolk County Bar Association Pro Bono Foreclosure Settlement Project.
Mr. Tierney received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Saint Joseph’s College and his juris doctor from Touro College, Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. While in law school, he was a member of the Touro Law Review. Mr. Tierney’s Law Review comment analyzing Huntington, New York’s sex offender policy and the intrastate right to travel was published in the Spring 2010 edition of the Touro Law Review (26 Touro L. Rev. 145).
Mr. Tierney is admitted to practice law in the State Courts of New York as well as the federal district courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York. He is also a member of the Suffolk County Bar Association.
David R. Smith, Esq. is an associate with the Petroff Amshen LLP and specializes in foreclosure defense. Mr. Smith has extensive experience at every stage of the foreclosure process; from pre-litigation settlement discussions, all the way through to the appellate process. Mr. Smith is a strong homeowner’s advocate and prides himself on helping homeowners stay in their homes and guiding clients through what can be an emotionally upsetting and confusing legal process.
Mr. Smith received his B.A. in Political Science from Georgia State University with honors, and his J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law. While in law school, Mr. Smith was an active member of the Tax Law Clinic and received the Pro Bono Certificate Award for his commitment to helping low income individuals and families.
Mr. Smith is admitted to practice in New York Supreme Courts and is a member of many professional associations including the American Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association.
Mr. Villanti joined Petroff Amshen LLP in July 2015 as a litigation associate. He concentrates his practice on mortgage foreclosure defense, as well as commercial contract disputes.
Mr. Villanti has experience representing individuals in all aspects of the mortgage foreclosure process and is committed to preventing clients from unjustly losing their homes.
Prior to joining Petroff Amshen, LLP, Mr. Villanti practiced law for two large international law firms in New York City. While at these firms, Mr. Villanti worked in the commercial litigation department representing individuals, investors, officers, directors, and corporations in both state and federal court in a number of matters involving products liability,constitutional law, real estate, bankruptcy, securities fraud, and contract litigation.
Alexander Krul is an associate attorney with Petroff Amshen LLP. Mr. Krul has been litigating foreclosure matters since 2012 and enjoys creating innovative solutions that enable homeowners to obtain favorable results and stay in their homes. Mr. Krul appreciates the art of courtroom advocacy and leaves no stone unturned in furtherance of homeowners’ interests.
